The Dale Hansen Football Classic was founded in 2012 and marks the beginning of a new legacy in Texas High School Football. The classic will be held September 7 and 8, 2012, at Stuart B. Lumpkins Stadium located in Waxahachie, Texas, and will feature six premier football teams from around the state of Texas. The 9,500 seat football facility features excellent viewing capabilities from all locations, a champion style artificial playing surface, and a spacious, three-level, 6,000 square foot press box.
The event is named for Dale Hansen, a Waxahachie resident and a award winning sportscaster with ABC's Dallas affiliate WFAA, Channel 8. Hansen is the weeknight sports anchor and also hosts Dale Hansen’s Sports Special on Sunday nights. Each week Hansen also recognizes a Scholar-Athlete of the Week who excels both on and off the field. WFAA will also lend its media power to the event as the news station has graciously agreed to promote the event leading up to the inaugural kick off on September 7th.
This inaugural high school football sporting event will feature a three-game exhibition that kicks off Friday, September 7, at 7:30 p.m. when the Italy Gladiators take on the Malakoff Tigers. On Saturday, September 8, the first game begins at 4:00 p.m. and will highlight the 2011 Bi-District Champion Thrall Tigers against the Florence Buffaloes. The second game, slated to begin at 7:30 p.m., will showcase the 2011 Division One Class 3A state finalist Alvarado Indians as they take on the Mexia Blackcats.
While the event is designed to showcase athleticism, the classic will also promote academics, as one boy and one girl from the senior class in each of the high schools represented in the classic will be awarded a scholarship based on their academic standing, moral courage, and leadership skills. Scholarship applications may be downloaded by clicking here or by contacting the lead high school counselor at each of the high schools represented in the 2012 classic - Italy, Malakoff, Florence, Thrall, Mexia, and Alvarado. Scholarship applications must be mailed and postmarked no later than August, 15, 2012.
The Dale Hansen Football Classic is hosted by Waxahachie ISD, in conjunction with the City of Waxahachie, the Waxahachie Chamber of Commerce, and the Waxahachie Convention and Visitor's Bureau.
